White Box Five is one of a series of works in landscape format contained in a glossy white box. Each of these pieces is lit by LED strips, powered by a lithium polymer battery. In order to preserve battery life the lights are operated by a sensor that only turns on when somebody stands in front of it.
This was my first attempt to move away from strictly geometric designs. My focus was on the effect of combining open layers, so that you can see into and through the complex interior space. I had in mind a soft version of checker plate.
The wavy arms are simply a means of supporting the central idea whilst maintaining the soft/fluid look of the piece.
The background colour is not the back of the box but a sheet of tissue paper lit from both in front and behind, which gives it a fluorescent quality.
